The Appearance of the City in its Third Decade
In its third decade, the City underwent significant improvement in appearance. A new residential neighborhood was built on the site of the Old City, which was notorious to all residents in the early 1950s. The dirty, winding alleys were replaced by clean, wide streets bordered by modern residential buildings. Buildings from the British Mandate period were also demolished and replaced by multi-story residential buildings suited to modern needs.
The Mandate era buildings that were not demolished were renovated, connected to the electricity and water infrastructure, and provided with convenient access (sidewalks and paths). Most of the “Mandatory City” is now populated by the Arab minority, who prefer single-family homes to housing projects, which do not meet their traditional living requirements.

Extensive renovations were also carried out in the first neighborhoods, which were established after the founding of the State. Balconies were added to the two-story houses in the Neve Oved and Neve Zayit neighborhoods, and their facades were improved. In the single-story houses that were built, most of which had only one room, the residents added rooms and balconies. The exposed land was turned into gardens, thus becoming beautiful and sought-after villas.
Special emphasis was placed on expanding housing units for low-income families with special needs in the neighborhoods of “Memshalti,” “Rasko,” and “Amidar.” In both the old and new neighborhoods, emphasis was placed on improving the external appearance by planting ornamental gardens and establishing playgrounds.
The 1970 Master Plan reflected the city's expansion eastward. In this part, residential neighborhoods and large service centers were built, such as Egged, a swimming pool, a tennis and sports center, clubs, and more.
