On May 16, 2017, a Strategic Framework Agreement for the development of the City of Lod was signed at a festive ceremony. The Agreement was signed between the Government of Israel and its various agencies, the City of Lod, and Lod Economic Development Corporation. As part of the strategic agreement, approximately 17,000 new housing units will be built throughout the city, planned for new neighborhoods including: West Lod (Nir Zvi) and East Lod (Ben Shemen). Also, as part of the agreement, projects will be carried out for the benefit of the city's residents, including: renovation and construction of public institutions throughout the city, rehabilitation and expansion of roads and sidewalks, construction of parks, gardens, bike paths, and more.
The Agreement includes significant budgets for municipal projects in a variety of areas, such as education, welfare, transportation, personal safety, tourism, culture, infrastructure, the environment, public spaces, and more. These projects are expected to move the city forward and improve the quality of life for its residents.
In addition, as part of the agreement, significant transportation projects will be developed, including the construction of the Lod bypass road (Road 200), which will connect Road 431 to Road 1. Grade separations will be built near the municipal library and in the northern commercial area to ensure safe and accessible passage at the intersection with the railroad tracks, and a new train station will be built in the northern commercial area.
