The Gateway of Israel
Ben Gurion Airport, adjacent to Lod, gives it the title of “gateway to the country.” Lod is a city with ideal accessibility.
Located in the heart of the country, close to Ben Gurion Airport, only a 15-minute drive from central Tel Aviv and the Gush Dan area, half an hour from Jerusalem, and close to strategic transportation routes such as the “Cross Israel Highway” (Route 6), the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem Expressway (Route 1), Route 40, Route 431, Route 44 (Tzrifin Road), and two train stations connecting the city to all parts of the country. All of these make Lod a city with ideal accessibility and significant potential for both residential and business development.
Indeed, thanks to these convenient access routes, the flow of people coming to Lod is growing, including dozens of industrial plants that benefit from the city's central location and quick access to both air and seaports. Lod's northern industrial zone is considered one of the most important and sought-after industrial centers in the entire central region due to its proximity to Ben Gurion Airport and the available land reserves in its vicinity.
The Lod Youth Center and the three student villages established there bring with them a fresh spirit that contributes to strengthening the personal and community resilience of the city's residents, as well as significantly improving its image as a younger and more vibrant city on the verge of a turning point in its development and advancement.
Lod's excellent education system provides a framework for learning from early childhood through to secondary school. Approximately 21,000 students attend all types of educational institutions in Lod: state public schools (mamlachti), state religious public schools (mamlachti dati), non-Jewish sector public schools, and special education. The curriculum in kindergartens, elementary schools, and high schools is based on the most advanced methods advocated by the Ministry of Education and is taught by teachers and educators who excel in these teaching methods.
In 2017, Lod won the National Education Award for the first time in its history, reflecting the major education overhaul taking place in the city, which has transformed it from a neglected and battered city of the past to a city that is now leaping forward and winning every award.
A wave of development has begun in Lod. The city is currently undergoing rapid renewal and development, including the start of construction on thousands of housing units, the establishment of educational and public institutions, the expansion of the employment park, transportation projects, improvements to the city's appearance, development and infrastructure, and a variety of programs focused on the development and promotion of the city while improving and streamlining services for city residents, who are the main target audience and beneficiaries of municipal activities.
This trend is also reflected in all areas of city life, including investment in education, culture, events, sports, the environment, and the development of tourism potential. We are investing unprecedented resources in branding the city, through excellent teamwork and strategic planning.
After many years, there is once again positive migration to the city by a new population that sees its enormous potential. Similarly, government institutions are moving to Lod, including the District Court and the Israel Railways offices. Many public figures recognize Lod's potential, see its momentum, and are getting involved, which is boosting the city's resources and budgets, attracting strong, young populations and diverse communities.
The new spirit blowing through Lod has been reflected in recent years in the national media, which is increasingly positive about the city. Over the past five years, starting in 2013, Lod has been featured in the media in a positive light, highlighting the city's advantages thanks to its strategic and central location in the heart of the country and its current renewal.
As part of its commitment to education, the city operates a network of renovated Community Centers (Matnasim), the beating heart of culture in Lod, offering a variety of social and leisure activities for all ages, as well as a range of shows and performances for the enjoyment of residents.
The jewel in the crown of Lod is its wonderful young people, who have grown up and been educated here and who carry with them a tremendous educational and social legacy. Tens of thousands of wonderful, high-quality young people add honor and pride to the city through their achievements and activities in various frameworks.
Lod has a good welfare system that works diligently to meet people’s needs and provide services and assistance to individuals, the elderly, families, and communities who are struggling to reach their full potential, enabling them to develop and function better and, in doing so, contribute more to their environment and society.
The 2018 Financial Stability Ranking of Local Authorities, compiled by the business information company, CofaceBDI, places Lod in eighth place. Lod achieved an unprecedented accomplishment among Municipalities in Israel when it won the Minister of the Interior's Award for Proper Financial Management for three consecutive years (2013-2017).
Lod's ranking among the 10 most stable cities in Israel, and the sound financial management awards are important news for the city and a mark of honor for the Lod Municipality, which has turned itself around, from a municipality on the verge of bankruptcy in the past, to a strong municipality with financial stability. These achievements are thanks to the joint efforts of the municipal administration and its employees, who are partners in the professional, proper, efficient, and responsible management of public and taxpayer’s funds.
In 2017, Lod signed a strategic development agreement with the Israeli Government totaling over 7 Billion NIS, which will ensure the city's future as a preferred residential destination in the center of the country. In the coming years, Lod is set to add nearly 20,000 housing units, almost doubling its population and becoming one of the largest and most sought-after cities in Israel for residential living, in the heart of the country's most desirable area.
Thousands of years of history and new sounds throughout the city. These are the sounds of a city rushing toward its future. Layer upon layer, it offers all the advantages of a city in the center of the country, seasoned with the sophistication and quality of a small city without traffic jams and with plenty of parking.
