Recycling

The Lod Municipality is working to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and increase recycling rates.

Recycling is the process of removing materials from the waste stream and using them as raw materials or to create new products. Most recycling in Israel is carried out in sorting and separation plants - recycling plants. Recycling plants collect various types of waste: plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, and more. The waste is separated by mechanical and manual means into materials that are sent for recycling.

Waste

Waste is an inevitable product of modern human society. Population growth and rising living standards lead to the accumulation of waste from consumer products. In Israel, the amount of waste has grown by about 2% each year over the past decade. Improper waste treatment can cause many hazards: soil and groundwater contamination, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, pest proliferation spread of diseases, safety hazards in air corridors, visual hazards, odor hazards, and damage to land value. Landfilling waste consumes valuable land resources and has environmental, health, and economic consequences. Therefore, the central principle in waste management is to transform waste from a nuisance into a resource and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. The hierarchy of waste treatment is reduction at the source, reuse, recycling, energy recovery from waste (recovery), and putting the remaining waste in landfills.

Packaging waste

The Packaging Treatment Regulation Law (2011) aims to reduce the negative impact on the environment caused by packaging waste. The purpose of the law is to reduce the amount of waste generated from packaging, prevent its landfill disposal, and encourage the reuse of packaging that is currently sent to landfill.

The Packaging Treatment Regulation Law imposes responsibility and obligations on the following, among others:

· Those responsible for waste disposal (local authorities and other bodies) - they are required by law to establish arrangements for the separation, collection, and disposal of packaging waste in their area and to contract with a recognized body to implement these arrangements.

· Citizens – According to the law, every person is obligated to dispose of packaging waste within the jurisdiction of the entity responsible for waste disposal, in accordance with the arrangements established in that jurisdiction. Furthermore, no person may collect or dispose of packaging waste within the jurisdiction of the entity responsible, except in accordance with those arrangements.

Construction Waste

The Environmental Unit deals with offenders who dispose of construction waste in public spaces and issues cleanup orders to those who dispose of the waste. In cases of renovations and construction, only licensed contractors should be used for the disposal of construction waste. By law, the person ordering the work is obligated to ensure that the construction waste they produce is removed to a site designated for construction waste only.

If you encounter illegal dumping of construction waste, you should immediately report it to the Municipal Hotline at 106.
